The studio in the Main Building, the Museum's third studio after those in the Sukiennice and the Princes Czartoryski Museum, was founded in 1995. It specialises in conservation of paintings and sculptures. At present four qualified conservators are employed in the studio, who are mainly responsible for 19th and 20th century Polish works kept in the Main Building, though they also conserve items from other branches of the National Museum.
The studio specialises in comprehensive conservation of groups of paintings by a single artist e.g. Zbigniew Pronaszko, Alfons Karpiński, Jacek Malczawski, Leon Wyczólkowski, and Witkacy. A good example of our work is our conservation in 2002-2005 of a collection of 24 works by Olga Boznańska. These paintings and sketches painted with oils on a cardboard support were not exhibited when they first arrived at the National Museum due to their poor state of preservation. During the work an innovative method of cleaning a granulated paint layer whilst also impregnating it was used and a new putty composition was developed to fill in large holes in the support whilst also meeting the specific requirements of the cardboard. Thanks to the work of our conservators the technical condition of the paintings was consolidated and they were once again fit for exhibition.
The studio also performs preventative conservation i.e. constant monitoring of atmospheric and lighting conditions in galleries and stores to ensure optimum conditions for storage and exhibition. Conservators also supervise the packing and transport of museum pieces, assess and inspect the state of preservation of items being loaned out, and supervise temporary exhibitions held in the Main Building.
