The Painting and Sculpture Conservation Studio at the Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace was founded on 1 October 2006 and is staffed by conservators who have been working for the Museum for many years. The main responsibility of the studio is to conserve museum artefacts from the collection of Department I – Polish Painting and Sculpture up to 1764 and Department XVIII – Orthodox Art.

The studio performs conservation work on religious artefacts from church and monastery interiors in the Małopolska region. These include altarpieces, polychromed and gilded wooden sculptures, board paintings and oil on canvas paintings. The studio also performs conservation work on religious artefacts associated with the Orthodox Church. These include icons from the former eastern regions of Poland, Russian icons and orthodox ceremonial objects.

Conservation procedures are based on physical and chemical analysis, VIS, UV and IR imaging, and analysis of pigments, binder and ground. These tests enable the conservator to gain an insight into the technique and technology used to create a particular work and its history and therefore make informed decisions regarding conservation. The workshop cooperates with the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow.
