The painting conservation studio in the Princes Czartoryski Museum is responsible for the National Museum's collection of West European painting and the Princes Czartoryski collection. The studio was founded in 1985 and has employed the same staff since 1987.
The studio supervises the storage conditions and state of preservation of the largest works of art in Polish collections e.g. Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine and Rembrandt's Landscape with the Good Samaritan. It also performs courier work when paintings are loaned out. Prestigious exhibitions for which Lady with an Ermine has been loaned out under conservator's protection include:
– Circa 1492, Washington October 1991 – January 1992
– in 1998 the painting travelled to its homeland, where it was exhibited in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, and in the Quirinal Palace in Rome.
The studio has also taken part in the organisation of large exhibitions:
- Leonardo da Vinci 'Lady with an Ermine' – Treasures from the Princes Czartoryski Museum, Japan 2001 – 2002
- Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland – a History of Collecting and Patronage, USA 2002 – 2003
About a thousand works of various kinds, often of a very high quality, have passed through the conservators' hands. Around 35 objects have been analysed in cooperation with experts from other fields providing an insight into the working methods of such masters as: Hans Kulmbach, Mariotto di Nardo, Palma Vecchio, Giovanni dal Ponte, Jacob Jordans, Dieric Bouts, Magnasco, Cranach the Younger, and Rembrandt.
